The best breaks and the best time to kiteboard in Fiji

The when and where of kitesurfing holidays in Fiji

Sometimes a change is as good as a holiday. But sometimes a holiday can bring change. If your kiting progression has ground to a halt you might need to rack up some hours in the water or even get some coaching. A little here and there with no advice might see some small improvements over months or years but if you want results now, a trip is in order…

So you’ve been considering a kitesurfing holiday to Fiji. Well here’s what you need to know to get the best experience from your kitesurfing trip.

Namotu Island Kite Weeks: what you missed in 2018

Namotu Island Kite Weeks: what you missed in 2018

Each year the Namotu Kite Weeks seem to get a little bigger and a little crazier as we pile more and more into each trip. This year we had a huge amount of incredible instructors providing everything from foiling to kiting to yoga and stand up paddle. With more space opened up on the Island to bring more support staff I've been able to offer a new level of service and improve the experience for our guests.

Fishing the Southern Great Barrier Reef

Written by Ben Wilson, Posted in Interviews

Offshore fishing near home on the Sunshine Coast

Fishing the Southern Great Barrier Reef

Fishing is one of my absolute favourite things, it definitely rivals kitesurfing as my greatest passion. I'm lucky enough to live on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, a beautiful part of Australia with easy access to some excellent fishing.

The Southern Great Barrier Reef is particularly good and it takes only a few hours in the car then a few more in the boat to access areas where you'll find species common in southern waters and more tropical climates - it's a kind of cross over zone where you end up with the best of both worlds.

On this trip I was joined by Dyllon Schulz and Beau Blake. Beau Blake has put together this clip so check it out. If you want to fish with Dyllon or me you can charter the Mitaia Rua operating out of Namotu Island, Fiji. Check it out at https://namotuislandfishing.com/

Cloudbreak Big Swell 2018

Written by Ben Wilson, Posted in Interviews

Kiting, towing and surfing one of the biggest swells in Fiji

Cloudbreak Big Swell 2018

I was on Namotu Island for some meetings about two weeks before the swell hit. I was preoccupied with work and not really watching too carefully but about 10 days out everyone started talking. A bunch of surfers started asking me if there was space on the Island and whether this was going to be like the 2012 Volcom swell. So instead of heading home as planned, I stayed on for the ride.

SoloSports Kite Weeks: wave clinics in Baja, Mexico

The place to go for serious progression

SoloSports Kite Weeks: wave clinics in Baja, Mexico

There’s a reason why people travel to such a remote part of the world; SoloSports is a wind and wave machine.

I kited every day for two weeks during the two consecutive Kite Weeks. The degree of progression made by guests here is second to none and that effect really comes down to the consistency of the wind and gentle waves that give everyone the opportunity to practise turns again and again till they’re comfortable.

When you’re not kiting there’s mountain biking, surfing, SUPing and siestas. Photographer Stu Gibson who joins each year to capture everyone's progress and act as unofficial mountain bike guide.

We’ll be back again same time next year so if you’re interested in improving your existing wave skills or moving on to a directional board then this is the trip for you. The group size is small so you have plenty of personal attention and you really won't find a better kite haven than SoloSports.

Next available trip is 4-11 May 2019. Click here for details.

iFish TV on Namotu Island

A week filming Australia's favourite fishing show in Fiji

iFish TV on Namotu Island

Most of you probably know Namotu Island, Fiji for it’s incredible surfing and kiting, but it also has world-class fishing that’s practically within casting distance of the beach. Fishing is one of my biggest passions and there’s no better place to indulge it than Namotu Island.

Here in Australia, IFish is one of the biggest and most recognised fishing shows. Paul and his wife, Cristy, their son Jet, and the team work hard and play hard and are so passionate about fishing. We wanted them to visit Namotu so they could experience the incredible fishing and also get a taste of the other water sports on offer.

Kitesurfing Cyclone Gita on Namotu Island

A few fun moments from Fiji's category 5 cyclone in February 2018

Kitesurfing Cyclone Gita on Namotu Island

In February this year (2018) Cyclone Gita devastated Tonga and was heading toward Fiji. I was on Namotu Island hosting some fishing trips and saw the pattern forming about a week out.

Cyclones are not uncommon for this time of year and I'd noticed the water was really warm, something that tends to bring both good fishing and cyclones. We tracked the weather system for about 7 days before it hit and although I had a feeling it would miss Fiji, the day before it was heading in our direction so I was forced to evacuate all the guests from the Island...

Apply to be a Kite Week instructor

Written by Ben Wilson, Posted in Interviews

We're looking for experienced coaches to work with us in Fiji

Apply to be a Kite Week instructor

We are now accepting applications for kitesurfing instructors for the Namotu Island Kite Weeks.

Yes, it's a dream job but it takes more than good kite skills so read on before you apply.

Our instructors must be proficient across surf and kite with SUP and fishing experience as a bonus. We sometimes require instructors act as surf guides/lifeguards on surf breaks, so it is essential that you have a good level of surfing experience. Surf Lifesaving experience or qualification is a bonus.

Brazil Kite Camps

Photos from two weeks in Taiba

Brazil Kite Camps
In October 2017 Stu Gibson and I spent two weeks in Taiba, Ceara in Brazil at the Vila Marola. We had unbelievable wind and met some amazing people. The contrast between tradition and technology is pretty stark here, as is the divide between rich and poor.
Here's a small selection of Stu's photos that show how incredible the kiting is and just how stunning the landscape is. We'll be back for sure.
Special thanks to Sigita Pipiriene for arranging the whole thing and Vila Marola for having us.

Battling Back Pain

Written by Ben Wilson, Posted in Interviews

Yoga and Pilates for preventing and treating back pain

Battling Back Pain
Back pain is something many of us live with. In fact I Googled some statistics – 1 in 6 Australians will suffer back pain at least once each year with 80% suffering at some stage in their lives – that’s huge! There aren’t many people who escape Scott-free but kitesurfers and surfers are at a really high risk. For years I was plagued with lower back pain that worsened after I broke my foot in 2014. I thought was just something I had to deal with, an inescapable consequence of competing and kiting for 20 years (and getting older). 2015 was my worst year; I was training hard with lots of weights and high intensity exercise at the gym but my back suffered. I was “fit” but I felt like shit. It’s only in the last 2 years have I started managing it properly with yoga and Pilates and finally found relief.

BWSURF 2018 Season

Written by Ben Wilson, Posted in Interviews

The inside story on our kites, bars and boards

BWSURF 2018 Season

Over the last 24 months my team and I at BWSURF have been busy making a lot of changes and working on an all new product range which is finally ready. The Æ2 Kite, Blue Chip Bar, Stallion V2, DHD signature boards and the Drifter 2.0 are the latest in our range of wave kiting equipment and I couldn't be happier with their performance and quality.

I am going to be honest and say that we have always been super proud of how well our gear performs in the waves however we’ve had more than our fair share of issues with the quality of some products.

But things have changed.

Rory Chapman's Stand Up Paddle Guide

Paddle technique, stance and getting started

Rory Chapman's Stand Up Paddle Guide
Rory Chapman is a BWSURF team rider and one of my Namotu Kite Week coaches. Although he spends much of his time teaching kiting and surfing, he's actually a very talented stand up paddler too. Over the last couple of years the number of our guests who either SUP or would like to has really increased so I thought I'd ask Rory to put down in words what he teaches in Fiji. Over to you, Rory....

Filthy West Kitesurfing Movie, 2011

A trip along the coast of Western Australia

Filthy West Kitesurfing Movie, 2011

I've been kiting in Western Australia for a long time and it's definitely one of the top places for wind and waves. It's rugged and challenging at times but offers some incredibly long and uncrowded stretches of coastline. In 2011 Ryland Blakeney, Josh Mulcoy, Ian Alldredge and I documented a trip from Perth down to Margaret River. It was filmed by Ollie Jacobsen, Jason Wolcott and Darren McCaugh. It's been 6 years since we released this film and fashion has changed since then but I'll always be so stoked when I look back on that trip. We scored some epic sessions.

Coral Coast, Fiji Kite Week

Look inside a different Kite Week experience

Coral Coast, Fiji Kite Week

I've just returned from Fiji after hosting 4 consecutive Kite Weeks. The first three on Namotu Island and the last at Matanivusi Resort on the Coral Coast. I love the variety and huge downwinders this part of Fiji offers plus of course the opportunity to kite waves such as Frigates and Fiji Pipe. The area tends to be very windy with uninterupted Trade Winds blowing from May to October every year.

Watch this short clip by Stu Gibson for a look inside this special Kite Week.
