MATANIVUSI Kite Week
CORAL COAST, Fiji
The Coral Coast is situated on the south-eastern (windward) side of Fiji's Viti Levu island, about 2 hours' drive from Nadi International Airport. The area is renowned for consistent Trade Winds throughout July-September and offers a multitude of surf breaks ideal for both surfing and kiting. Ben has been fishing, surfing and kiting along the Coral Coast for over 15 years and first went to Matanivusi a couple of years ago after becoming intrigued by the area's potential as a kite destination.
Matanivusi's owners, Brian & Donna, found this amazing piece of coastline some 11 years ago and have sought to delevop a sustainable eco resort amid the area's incredible breaks and reef fringing the turquoise waters of the lagoon. The natural rain forest to the white sandy beach line, the creek and the untouched beauty have been maintained and their love of the area and local Fijian villagers is a real highlight.
"Matanivusi has got to be one of the world's best locations for downwinders. The water colour, waves, wind and service at Matanivusi is second-to-none and I can't wait to get back there in 2017." - Ben Wilson
DATES FOR 2017 - 2nd - 9th September - ENQUIRE NOW. PLACES AVAILABLE!
Kiting & surfing
Matanivusi offers world-class kitesurfing downwinders, surf-kiting, flat-water kiting and surfing all set amid beautiful rainforest accommodation. Immerse yourself in Fijian culture and spend your days on the water. Epic downwinders and reef breaks including Frigates and Fijian Pipe surround the area and cater to a varying levels of experience. Depending on wind direction and swell, Ben runs downwinders from Bird Island (pictured) to the resort, Pipe Beach to Fijian Pipe, Bird Island to Frigates, Up Rising to Matanivusi, Matanivusi to Mango Bay and many more. There are huge areas of incredible kiting and so much to see in this part of Fiji. When there's no wind there's great surf at Frigates, Pipe, Shifties, J’s and Vunaniu which provide an excellent mix of lefts and rights.
Ben will be joined by a couple of hand-picked coaches who will be there to support and advise you throughout the week and make sure your experience is safe and enjoyable. Co-host and yoga instructor, Sasha Hutchinson will be taking daily classes open to everyone and the resort's team of local staff are there to make your stay comfortable. Professional photographer, Stu Gibson will be there to shoot action and lifestyle footage for you to take home at the end of your trip.
When the Trade Winds blow they typically blow all day in this part of Fiji. July to November are the best months for wind.
Like most tropical locations, the waves are greatly effected by tide, wind direction, swell height and wind strength we will make a plan to suit the day's conditions.
Although primarily a kite trip, Matanivusi is located in a pristine area that boasts a range of activities such as surfing, snorkelling, SUP'ing and fishing which are all included. Daily yoga with Sasha Hutchinson is provided in the resort's beautiful studio and the area also offers SCUBA diving, nature walks and whitewater rafting. Of course you can simply unwind and relax in one of the pools, on the beach or simply have a drink at the bar.
FOOD & DINING
All à la carte meals are included throughout your stay and cooked by local Fijian staff.
Matanivusi’s restaurant offers an eclectic fusion of Fijian, Indian and contemporary dishes using only the freshest ingredients using fruits grown from around the property depending on the season, vegetables cultivated in the local villages and fresh Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi from the daily catches brought in at Suva harbour.
The Restaurant and Bar has been designed with the intention of maximising the view of the coral fringed lagoon, whether you are enjoying fresh Trevalley cooked in coconut cream or a Matanivusi Mai Tai. The ‘Dua Tali’ Bar (the ‘One Moore Bar’) is a full service bar with a wide variety of tropical concoctions for your delight. The Bar also has a selection of wine and beers, along with a full range of spirits and liqueurs. If you are looking for something a little more romantic you can have a candle lit dinner on your private deck as the ocean waves serenade the sun to sleep or under the giant Baka (Banyan) tree.
Legendary surf photographer Stu Gibson will be roaming around taking plenty of action and lifestyle shots so you’ll have plenty of quality shots to take home. These professional photos are yours to take home on USB. Check out Stu's work on Facebook or in pretty much any surf mag on the shelves…
The resort sleeps up to 20 guests in private bungalows set amid the lush rainforest. Each bure is divided into 2 separate accommodation areas with their own en suite. The room is tastefully furnished with a king size bed (or 2 king singles), mosquito net for that tropical feel, a coffee table and comfortable chairs. All rooms are screened. The large deck and vast expanses of glass gives each unit breathtaking views of the beach and rainforest.
