The best breaks and the best time to kiteboard in Fiji

The when and where of kitesurfing holidays in Fiji

Sometimes a change is as good as a holiday. But sometimes a holiday can bring change. If your kiting progression has ground to a halt you might need to rack up some hours in the water or even get some coaching. A little here and there with no advice might see some small improvements over months or years but if you want results now, a trip is in order…

So you’ve been considering a kitesurfing holiday to Fiji. Well here’s what you need to know to get the best experience from your kitesurfing trip.

Namotu Island Kite Weeks: what you missed in 2018

Namotu Island Kite Weeks: what you missed in 2018

Each year the Namotu Kite Weeks seem to get a little bigger and a little crazier as we pile more and more into each trip. This year we had a huge amount of incredible instructors providing everything from foiling to kiting to yoga and stand up paddle. With more space opened up on the Island to bring more support staff I've been able to offer a new level of service and improve the experience for our guests.

Cloudbreak Big Swell 2018

Kiting, towing and surfing one of the biggest swells in Fiji

Cloudbreak Big Swell 2018

I was on Namotu Island for some meetings about two weeks before the swell hit. I was preoccupied with work and not really watching too carefully but about 10 days out everyone started talking. A bunch of surfers started asking me if there was space on the Island and whether this was going to be like the 2012 Volcom swell. So instead of heading home as planned, I stayed on for the ride.

iFish TV on Namotu Island

A week filming Australia's favourite fishing show in Fiji

iFish TV on Namotu Island

Most of you probably know Namotu Island, Fiji for it’s incredible surfing and kiting, but it also has world-class fishing that’s practically within casting distance of the beach. Fishing is one of my biggest passions and there’s no better place to indulge it than Namotu Island.

Here in Australia, IFish is one of the biggest and most recognised fishing shows. Paul and his wife, Cristy, their son Jet, and the team work hard and play hard and are so passionate about fishing. We wanted them to visit Namotu so they could experience the incredible fishing and also get a taste of the other water sports on offer.

Kitesurfing Cyclone Gita on Namotu Island

A few fun moments from Fiji's category 5 cyclone in February 2018

Kitesurfing Cyclone Gita on Namotu Island

In February this year (2018) Cyclone Gita devastated Tonga and was heading toward Fiji. I was on Namotu Island hosting some fishing trips and saw the pattern forming about a week out.

Cyclones are not uncommon for this time of year and I'd noticed the water was really warm, something that tends to bring both good fishing and cyclones. We tracked the weather system for about 7 days before it hit and although I had a feeling it would miss Fiji, the day before it was heading in our direction so I was forced to evacuate all the guests from the Island...

Apply to be a Kite Week instructor

Written by Ben Wilson, Posted in Interviews

We're looking for experienced coaches to work with us in Fiji

Apply to be a Kite Week instructor

We are now accepting applications for kitesurfing instructors for the Namotu Island Kite Weeks.

Yes, it's a dream job but it takes more than good kite skills so read on before you apply.

Our instructors must be proficient across surf and kite with SUP and fishing experience as a bonus. We sometimes require instructors act as surf guides/lifeguards on surf breaks, so it is essential that you have a good level of surfing experience. Surf Lifesaving experience or qualification is a bonus.

The highlights reel from each trip of 2017

Namotu Island Kite Weeks

The Namotu Kite Weeks are all over for another year. We had some great conditions for surfing, stand up paddle, kitesurfing, foiling and more. Watch the weekly wrap-up clips by Stu Gibson to see some highlights from each trip.

There's a lot more to Kite Weeks than just kitesurfing - Namotu is the perfect place to learn to surf and SUP too. So whether you're looking to surf, SUP or kite yourself, or bring your partner and friends to learn, check out these trips and get your name on the waitlist as we're already booked a year in advance.

Kite Fiji's Coral Coast

Downwinders, wave kiting & more at Matanivusi

Kite Fiji's Coral Coast
Earlier this month (September 2016) I took a small group of guests straight from the Namotu Kite Weeks down the Coral Coast to Matanivusi. The resort is set amongst the rainforest beside the ocean on Viti Levu's windward side. Miles of pristine water, reef breaks and just 8 of us kiting.

I’ve been coming to this area to fish, kite and surf for about 15 years but a couple of years ago I decided to find somewhere to host kite weeks and Matanivusi was the obvious choice in the area. With some of Fiji's best surf breaks and kiteboarding spots at its doorstep plus world-class fishing, whitewater rafting and onsite yoga studio it is hard to beat. The Trade Wind blows really consistently on this side of Viti Levu so from July to November surfing can be blown out but the kiting is incredible. Matanivusi is close to Frigates, Fiji Pipe and a huge selection of downwind kiting destinations as well as offering an exclusive experience similar to Namotu.

Thanks to Pete, Stu, Laurel, Tony, Richard, James & Lance for joining me on the first test trip. After an incredible week of kiting, exploring the area and relaxing we’ll be doing it again in 2017.

Stu put together an edit (bottom of page) to give you an idea of the area and what we did during our stay. Find out more about this kitesurfing trip and see more photos here

2016/17 Kite Trips in Australia, Mexico & the Philippines

Find the trip that's right for you

2016/17 Kite Trips in Australia, Mexico & the Philippines

For Australians August means winter is almost over and it's time to start thinking about the kite season ahead - trips, new gear, warmer water and wind.

We have a couple of kite trips right here in Aus over the next few months; one with BWSURF's Pete O'Keefe for beginners, and one with me for intermediate/advanced kiters who want to work on their wave skills. Learn some new skills at the start of the season so you can make the most of it!

For Americans I know August means something totally different, but if you're already planning for next season, check out the SoloSports Kite Weeks in April/May and September next year. The place is absolutely incredible and a buck-list destination for kiters, windsurfers and surfers alike.

Highlights from July 2016

Namotu Island Kite Week

We've just returned from the first of 2016's Kite Weeks. Thanks to everyone who joined us in for another incredible week on Namotu Island, Fiji. Although we didn't get a whole lot of wind I think we all had a great time. There were plenty of extra activities and workshops with Pete & Trev.

Thanks to Mandy & Scotty plus all my crew for keeping everyone busy - Trevor Hendy, Pete Evans, Pete O'Keefe, Stu Gibson, Stew Howard, Mitch, Azza, Nikki & Sasha.

Here's a clip by Tom Rawlins with some highlights (www.rawlensmedia.com).

Namotu Island, Fiji Pro 2016

Josh Kerr's first kitesurfing lesson

Namotu Island, Fiji Pro 2016

Consecutive lay days on the Fiji Pro means everyone has to find alternate entertainment - fishing, free surfing, maybe a little partying and sometimes even kitesurfing.

The wind is pretty good at this time of year so I always take my kites and try to get a few sessions in. This normally sparks a bit of interest and I usually manage to rope someone into giving it a go. Joel Parkinson & Mick Fanning have tried their hands at kiting and this year Josh Kerr had a crack. I have to say he takes the record for the fastest learner - up and riding in minutes and even going up-wind on his second run! I guess it's no surprise these guys are naturals. They don't really have to worry about the board so all their focus can be on the kite which makes it pretty simple. Here are some pics from Josh's first kite lesson plus a few extras from the week here on Namotu...

All images thanks to fellow kiter & fast learner, Stu Gibson..
